Alex Bowman wins Daytona 500 pole, full NASCAR Cup Series qualifying

The front row for the season opening Daytona 500 has been set. On the pole is Alex Bowman.

Bowman took home the pole as he begins his first full seaon in the No. 88 formerly driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. by claiming the pole at Daytona, a track synonymous with the Earnhardt name.

Qualifying for the Daytona 500 still uses the old system in which cars take two laps around the 2.5 mile Daytona International Speedway in hopes of securing the fastest time. In addition to a front row spot, the top two qualifiers will also be on the pole for the Can AM duels on Thursday.

The rest of the fields qualifying times will split them up into their respective duel race with the results of those races determining the actual starting lineup at Daytona.

With just 40 cars entered into the Daytona 500, all drivers will make the race.
