Denny Hamlin won the 2016 Daytona 500. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season got underway on Sunday with the Daytona 500. While 40 drivers took the green flag to start the race only one could go to victory lane and that ended up being Hamlin.
Chase Elliott began the day on the pole but the rookie in the No. 24 saw his chances of a good finish go away when he lost control of his car coming off turn four early in the day. Later in the day teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. suffered a similar feat.
In the closing laps it was Matt Kenseth and a host of Toyota’s facing the field. Kenseth took the white flag but he was relegated to a 14th place finish after teammate Hamlin got around him and nudged past Martin Truex Jr. to claim the win.
