Kenseth wins pole, Fords atop grid

Matt Kenseth is just one of many drivers hoping for a change of fortune as the Sprint Cup series heads to Vegas. Kenseth, a former series champion and past winner at Las Vegas, finished atop the standings in final practice and later claimed the pole for Sundays event.

He will be joined on the front row by Marcos Ambrose, another Ford driver. In fact Ford claimed the first four positions for Sundays race with Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle taking third and fourth.

Kenseth’s lap of 188.884 was fast enough to set a new track record besting that of Kurt Busch whose 188.719 had become the bench mark last year.

When asked afterward Kenseth said he figured he’d find a way to mess up his qualifying run even with a fast car eluding to just five career poles in 12 seasons at the cup level.

David Ragan who was the second fastest car during practice mad a mishap during qualifying, spinning his car. He will start at the back of the field for Sunday’s race.

Brian Keselowski was the lone driver who failed to qualify.
