After clearing waivers unclaimed the Cleveland Browns have signed quarterback Connor Shaw to the practice squad.

Shaw, 22, was signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina. He made 32 starts for the Gamecocks under head coach Steve Spurrier going 27-5 as a starter posting a 56:16 TD/INT ratio to go along with completition percentage of 65.5 while adding 17 rushing touchdowns.

On another team Shaw may have been given a few more looks this preseason for a backup job but the Browns went much of the preseason trying to decide whether Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel would start under center. Shaw remains an intriguing backup option but his 6-foot-1 and 210 pound frame could limit his future outlook.

The Browns also released veteran Rex Grossman on Sunday though it is possible he returns to the Browns after Week 1 when his contract would not be guaranteed for the season. Grossman has previous time in Kyle Shanahan’s offense while the two were in Washington.
