Regan Smith is currently second in the NASCAR Nationwide Series point standings and while the driver of the No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro re-signed with JR Motorsports recently that has not stopped him from dreaming of a return to the Sprint Cup Series.
“I definitely want to get back to Cup,” said Smith. “I don’t think I’ve ever denied that or said that I don’t. That’s the goal. I want to prove that I belong there and get to race on Sunday’s and get to run the longer races again.”
Smith last raced in the Cup Series two years ago before the No. 78 Furniture Row team dropped in him favor of Kurt Busch. While there are a few Cup seats up for grabs in 2015, Smith felt it was best to get his plans for next season in place now.
“Naturally, there are some openings—on paper, it would appear—on that (Sprint Cup) side,” said Smith. “But at the time, I just felt like it was time to go ahead and start trying to solidify some things for next year and know, generally speaking, where I’m going to be.”
Smith’s lone Cup Series win came in the Southern 500 in 2011.
