The No. 48 car of Jimmie Johnson crossed the start finish line first, claiming victory in the 55th running of the Daytona 500. It was his second win of the race, as he won the 2006 event. It was Johnson’s 400th start he joins a list of NASCAR legends to do so.
Dale Earnhardt Jr finished second in the race. Mark Martin, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Newman rounded out the top five.
Danica Patrick started on the pole for the race becoming the first female to lead the field to green in NASCAR’s top series. Though Jeff Gordon led the first lap of the race. Patrick would later lead lap 90. She finished the race eight. It was the best finish for a woman in the Daytona 500.
An wreck on lap 33 claimed some pre-race favorites in Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray. Brad Keselowski and others were also damaged in the incident.
