Phoenix Racing is currently working on a driver lineup for the 2013 season. Team owner James Finch announced on Thursday that Regan Smith will drive the No. 51 car during the Daytona 500. Smith is slated to run the entire NASCAR Nationwide schedule for JR Motorsports.
A.J. Allmendinger figures to get some time in the car as well.
“Regan will go to Daytona for us, but I want to help AJ run some races, too,” Finch said.
Allmendinger’s best run for Phoenix Racing was a 24th place finish at Charlotte.
Kurt Busch drove the No. 51 car for much of last season before leaving to assume to seat of the No. 78 car which was driven by Smith at that time. Busch scored the team’s best finish, a third place run at Sonoma. Busch also won a Nationwide Series race for the team at Daytona.
It was unknown, until Thursday, whether Phoenix Racing would compete at the Sprint Cup level in 2013.
