Jimmie Johnson can clinch Chase spot at Michigan

Five drivers can “mathematically” clinch a Chase spot after Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The magic number for the race is 145; any driver 145 points ahead of 11th position will clinch a spot.

Jimmie Johnson, your current points leader has won 3 races this season, but you have to remember after the Richmond race weekend, the points get reset to 2,000.  For each win a driver has they earn 3 bonus points. He currently owns 9 bonus points for his 3 wins this season. Johnson currently is 124 points ahead of 11th place.

Greg Biffle is another driver that could clinch a spot in the top 10. Biffle has won 1 race this season at Texas, he is currently only -1 point behind Johnson but two other drivers have more wins then him at the moment putting Biffle in seventh place in the points right now. ( behind Johnson, Stewart, Keselowski, Hamlin, Earnhardt Jr., Kenseth) Biffle currently has a 123 point lead over 11th, he needs to hit 145 leaving Michigan. A total of 47 points can be made up in a race.

Matt Kenseth in his last year racing for Roush Fenway Racing also only needs to hit the magic 145 point marker to be locked into the Chase. He is currently sits 122 points in front of 11th place.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. currently is  107 points ahead of 11th place, he also needs to hit 145 to claim a Chase spot at Michigan, a track he won at in June.

Brad Keselowski has a remote chance of clinching at least a Wild Card spot with a win on Sunday,but it all depends on the finishes of other drivers.

Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman currently hold the two Wild Card spots.
