Stephen Leicht hits groundhog at Pocono (Video)

All sorts of debris finds its way onto NASCAR tracks. During practice on Friday for the upcoming Pocono 400 presented by #nascar the debris happened to be a groundhog.

Stephen Leicht made contact with the groundhog while using the cut off of the tunnel turn to end a practice run. Leicht initially believed he hit a beaver. Martin Truex identified the animal as a groundhog and scraped the wall in the process.

No remains of the animal were found on Leicht’s #33 car. Leicht is not guaranteed a starting spot in the field for Sunday’s race and must qualify on time.

This is not the first time an animal has made it’s way on the track at Pocono. Ducks, chickens and deer have made it onto the track thanks in part to the wildlife area surrounding the 2.5 mile triangle track. The deer was struck and killed by Neil Bonnett, one if it’s legs actually ended up in the grill of Bonnett’s car.
