Let the speculation begin. The Home Depot now offers Penske trucks for rental at some of it’s stores. Could the Home Depot switch it’s sponsorship to Penske backed Ford’s in 2013?
When Penske made a deal with Shell/Pennzoil to use their motor oil in his rental truck service the oil company became the primary sponsor of the #22 car. The company wanted a top notch championship contending driver in the car so Kurt Busch was moved to the ride. The car is now driven by AJ Allmendinger.
While this is just speculation at it’s finest it is worth noting that Joey Logano, the current driver of the Home Depot car at Joe Gibbs Racing, does not have a contract for 2012. In addition it was widely speculated that Home Depot pressured Gibbs hard to sign Carl Edwards prior to the driver resigning with Rouse Fenway Racing.
Sam Hornish, who runs in the Nationwide Series for Penske, is also hopeful of running the 2013 season at the Sprint Cup level. It’s not known if Penske will expand to three teams or terminate their relationship with Allmendinger.
This season the #20 car is to be sponsored primarily by the Home Depot in as many as 24 races. Dollar General is also sponsoring that car. The partnership of the Home Depot and Joe Gibbs Racing at the Cup level dates back to 1999 when Tony Stewart made his debut in the series. Stewart won two championships while driving the car but the team has failed to finish better then 16th in the overall driver standings. Logano has one win at the Cup level since his debut in 2008.
