The San Jose Sharks issued the following update Wednesday: “Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle was kept overnight at a hospital in St. Louis. He will be returning to San Jose later today to continue his medical care and undergo further evaluation.”

San Jose Mercury News beat writer David Pollak exchanged texts with Boyle on Wednesday morning in which Pollak said Boyle told him, “I’m OK. That was scary. Hopefully the symptoms will be very minor if any going forward.”

Boyle was going to the left corner boards to retrieve a puck and got a forearm check from behind by the Blues’ Maxim Lapierre. Boyle was down for several minutes before being placed on the stretcher and wheeled off the ice 5:22 into the first period.

Lapierre received a five-minute major for checking from behind as well as a fighting major and ejected from the game. Teammate Ryan Reaves and San Jose’s Matt Pelech also received fighting majors and game misconducts; San Jose’s Andrew Desjardins got a minor for instigating a fight with Lapierre, a major for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct.
