Mark Martin won the pole for Sunday’s race at Phoenix International Raceway. NASCAR’s second race of the season, the Subway Fresh Fit 500 will take place on Sunday.
He claimed the pole with a speed of 138.074. The track record was set last fall by Kyle Busch at a speed of 138.766 mph
Martin won the pole for the spring race at Phoenix last year. With only 43 cars entered into the race there were no cars that went home after qualifying.
Joe Gibbs Racing set the pace in practice with Matt Kenseth atop the scoring pylon. He was followed by Kyle Busch, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards.
The No. 98 Ford driven by Michael McDowell will not compete at Phoenix. McDowell tweeted that the team had fallen behind building cars for this season. They finished 9th at Daytona.
Meanwhile the No. 44 Ford of XXXtreme Motorsport will make its season debut with Scott Riggs behind the wheel.
