Dale Earnhardt Jr. won Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway to close out the Eliminator Round of the Chase after rain hit the track again.
After rain forced the scheduled afternoon race to be run under the lights, it was the driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet going to victory lane in the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 after rain.
Jimmie Johnson started the race on the pole but second place driver Kurt Busch beat him to the initial green flag which resulted in a pass though penalty for Busch. On the first pit stop after a competition caution on lap 40 it was Johnson who took a penalty for entering pit road too fast.
Rain struck again with Earnhardt Jr. winning leaving Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards all out of the championship hunt.
Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. all advance to Homestead Miami Speedway with a championship shot.
