Like so many other drivers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be driving a throwback paint scheme this weekend when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series hits Darlington Raceway.
Earnhardt Jr’s car will look like the one driven by Cale Yarborough from 1981-82.
“The suit is just like his,” said Earnhardt. “And he had this (blue) color shoes. There’s a picture of him with his car at Daytona in the grass before the 500 and he’s wearing Carolina blue (shoes) — he doesn’t call ’em Carolina blue, being from Timmonsville — but they sort of match this part of the V (in the Valvoline logo); I think that’s what they were going for.”
While the paint scheme is being likened to the one driven by Yarborough, many will argue that it also looks a lot like the car driven by Mark Martin during his time driving the No. 6 Valvoline Ford Thunderbird.
With wins at Talladega and Daytona, the 40-year-old Earnhardt is locked into a Chase spot. In 20 starts at Darlington, Earnahrdt has yet to find victory lane but does have four finishes inside the top-five and an average finish of 14.3.
