Richard Petty Motorsports is considering a move away from Ford.

At first owner Richard Petty elicited laughter when he broke the news.

“We talk to everybody all the time; I’ve been talking to Volkswagen,” said Petty during a visit to the Dollar General’s annual Race Day.

Currently RPM fields who cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with drivers Aric Almirola and Marcos Ambrose.

The hot rumor of late has been a switch to Toyota but thus far Petty is not ready to announce anything.

“We’ve got to look at our team and look at our circumstances,” Petty said via the Tennessean. “We’ve got to look and say, ‘Okay, what’s going to be the best for us right now, what’s going to the best for us two years down the road, what’s going to be the best for us five years down the road?'”

At the end of the 2009 season RPM switched from Dodge to Ford but their deal ends at end of this season. Petty recently met with Ford Racing director Jamie Allison who is looking to keep the two car team under the Ford banner.
