A.J Allmendinger will be driving the No. 22 Ford Mustang for Penske Racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America on June 22.

Travis Geisler, the team’s competition director, told Motor Racing Network of Penske Racing’s plans Friday morning.

“AJ is somebody that’s in the fold right now, and somebody we have a lot of experience with and know is a talented road-course racer.”

The race, known as the Johnsonville Sausage 200 is the first road course of three on the Nationwide schedule. Penske Racing’s usual drivers, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano  race the next day at Sonoma in California and instead of having his drivers play double-duty with the distance between the two tracks, elected to bring Allmendinger aboard.

Allmendinger has made strides coming back into racing, sharing the No.51 Chevrolet in the Sprint Cup series with Regan Smith and Austin Dillion this year after losing his ride with Penske Racing in the series last Summer.

Allmendnger has also been driving for Penske Racing’s IndyCar program, where he was awarded a seventh in this years Indianapolis 500.
