The 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place on Sunday. Ed Carpenter will lead a field of 33 cars to the green flag after he set the pole winning speed. Carpenter is the first American pole sitter since 2006 and first driver/owner to win the pole since 1975.

A record-tying four females will compete in the field which also features two drivers trying to win their record-tying fourth win at the brick yard. A win by Heilo Castroneves or Dario Franchitti would tie them with Rick Mears, Al Unser and A.J. Foyt for the most ever.

The last nine Indy 500’s have been won by engine marker Honda.

Coverage of the race begins on ABC at 11:00 am ET. The green flag will fly at 12:12 pm ET.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh will drive the pace car with Sandi Patty singing the National Anthem. Jim Nabors, the actor that famously portrayed Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, will sing “Back Home Again in Indiana”. Mari Hulman George will give the command to fire engines.

Michael Jourdain Jr was the lone driver who failed to qualify for the race.
