Greg Erwin announced as crew chief of Sam Hornish

Sam Hornish’s crew chief for next season has been announced. Veteran crew chief Greg Erwin will call the shots for the No. 12 team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Erwin recently served as a crew chief of the No. 43 car at Richard Petty Motorsports and before that had worked with Greg Biffle and the No. 16 car at Roush Fenway Racing.

Penske Racing is hoping that pairing Erwin with Hornish will be a winning combination in 2013. Last season Hornish was in contention for the Nationwide Series title until late in the season and ended the year with 10 finishes inside the top-five and 22 inside the top-ten.

“It is an honor to be selected as the crew chief of the No. 12 Ford Mustang,” said Erwin. “I would like to thank Roger Penske and everyone at Penske Racing for the opportunity to be a part of this championship-caliber team. I look forward to working hard to build a team that consistently wins races and competes for championships.”

Under Erwin’s guidance Greg Biffle won five races and made the Sprint Cup Chase three consecutive seasons.

Hornish also is expected to run a handful of races in a third car at the Sprint Cup level for Penske Racing. He ran 20 races in the Cup Series in 2012 with a best finish of fourth in the fall race at Dover.
