Regan Smith to drive No. 5 for JR Motorsports in 2013

It has been perhaps the worst kept secret in NASCAR for the last two weeks. Today JR Motorsports announced that it had signed Regan Smith to a contract which will place the driver in the No. 5 Chevrolet for the 2013 season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

JR Motorsports currently fields two cars in the Nationwide Series, the No. 7 driven by Danica Patrick and the No. 88 which is currently driven by Col Whitt. The deal calls for Smith to run the entire Nationwide schedule.

Since being removed from the seat of the No. 78 car at Furniture Row Racing, Smith had substituted for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 88 car. Smith will drive the No. 51 car of Phoenix Racing at Phoenix and Homestead in the Cup Series later this year.

Smith has one career win in the Cup series at Darlington.

In the Nationwide Series the 29-year-old Smith has made 102 starts. Smith’s last start in the series came in 2007 .

When news was released, Smith tweeted out “So excited to be joining @JRMotorsports Going to be a great year! “
