New crew chief for Kevin Harvick starting at Bristol

Kevin Harvick, driver of the No.29 Budweiser Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing (RCR) will be getting a new crew chief (CC) come this weekends race. You’ll see a familiar face up on the box that you should remember from last season.

Gil Martin will be resuming the role of CC of the No.29 starting at Bristol Motor Speedway, a track that Harvick has an average finish of 12.9 at in his last five races.

Martin, who first took over as CC at the Spring Richmond race in 2009, was Harvicks CC through the rest of 2009 up until the end of the 2011 season when Shane Wilson took over.

Harvick and Wilson had previously worked together in the Nationwide Series in 2006, earning 10 wins, 24 top-five finishes and 31 top 10s en route to the title. They won that by a series-record 824-point margin.

Together Martin and Harvick won seven races between the 2010 and 2011 season.

Harvick is win less this season, and has only finished in the top five 3 times. He currently sits 8th place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings.

The reason for the change? “We’re just trying to turn things around to make sure we get in the Chase, then be competitive once we get into the Chase,” Martin told “It’s not a question of us knowing each others history, we’ve worked together before.”
