Indianapolis Motor Speedway Brickyard 400 Preview

The Brickyard 400, officially dubbed as the  “Crown Royal Presents the Curtiss Shaver400 at the Brickyard powered by” is only 9 days away. Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), the 2.5 mile oval track has the second highest purse in NASCAR; with only the Daytona 500 ahead of it.

This year is the first year the speedway is having three major events run over a four day period. The Super Weekend will consist of  the GRAND-AM ROLEX Series Race, the Nationwide Series Race and Brickyard 400.

The NASCAR Nationwide Series race is the first time the Nationwide cars have raced at the infamous speedway. The Sprint Cup Series cars have been racing there since 1994, when Jeff Gordon took home the first ever checkered flag at the speedway.

It wasn’t until 2002 when Dale Jarrett won at the Brickyard, that he kissed the bricks and from that time it became a tradition for whomever has won.

The race has seen eleven different winners over its 18 year span. NASCAR greats such as Dale Earnhardt Sr, Dale Jarrett,  Bill Elliot, Bobby and Terry Labonte have raced there. Jeff Gordon has won four times and finished in the top ten fourteen times. Five time NASCAR Sprint Series Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has won there three times out of the 10 times he has raced at IMS. Winners have also included 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray and 2012 winner Paul Menard.

The ‘weekend’ starts Thursday July 26 with Nationwide Practice followed by the Annual Hauler Parade, the Grand Am Rolex runs practice and qualifying on Friday with the race beginning Friday evening at 8:30pm.  Saturday is Cup Series practice and Nationwide and Cup Qualifying followed by the Nationwide Race at 4:30 pm.

Sunday fans will gather into the Speedway to see the 19th running of the Brickyard 400, and there with the drop of the checkered flag; another driver will get his chance to kiss the bricks.
