Could Ron Hornaday drive KBM truck?

During the Nationwide race at Phoenix it was noted that Ron Hornaday had signed a letter of intent to drive for a truck series team next year. But could the four time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion be driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports next season?

Following their incident at Texas, where Busch wrecked Hornaday under caution after the two made contact, the two driver have been in communication.

In an interview Kevin Harvick, owner of Hornaday’s current truck, said that Busch and Hornaday had conversations though out the week. “Yeah, as far as I know, (team manager) Rick Wren called Ron and offered him the #18 truck for next year. At first it started just with him calling Ron trying to get Ron to call NASCAR so he wouldn’t lose his job. That was how all that progressed.”(Team Chevy)

Could Hornaday be in a Kyle Busch owned truck? Its very possible when you consider the landscape of the truck series. If you look at the winners this year in the truck series you may notice that they are made up of just a handful of teams. Primarily the winners have been in trucks owned by Busch, Harvick and Richard Childress Racing. Harvick’s organization is closing following Homestead. ThorSport (2), Germain Racing (1) and Michael Waltrip Racing (1) also have found victory lane.

Anyone who drives for Kyle Busch or Richard Childress next season becomes the instant favorite for series champion. They are the top two teams in the sport.

At Kyle Busch Motorsports there was just one full time truck this year. Busch drove the majority of the races but Denny Hamlin was also able to find victory lane. If Hornaday was to come aboard we would expect that Busch would start up a second team. In 2010 Busch attempted to run two full time teams but the second team was closed when sponsorship became difficult to find. Tayler Malsam drove that truck.

Ty Dillon will assume the seat of the #3 next year and Joey Coulter will remain in the #22 according to representatives at RCR. It is unclear if the organization would start a third full time team now that KHI is closing.

Right now it is unknown when an announcement would come from anyone regarding the plans of Hornaday or KBM.
