The Colorado Rockies placed OF Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right middle finger on Wednesday, retroactive to August 5.

CarGo has been dealing with the finger injury since July 7, and although he was cleared by doctors to play through the sprain and gave it a real shot, the discomfort only got worse and won’t go away unless he rests for a significant period of time.

“This is very frustrating and it’s not something I wanted,” Gonzalez said.

“But this is something we had to do for the good of the team — and hopefully to help me get better.”

Rockies recalled left-handed pitcher Jeff Francis from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Francis will work out of the bullpen for Colorado.

Gonzalez was batting .302/.367/.591 with 26 homers and 21 steals.
