NASCAR penalizes MWR removing Truex Jr from Chase, Newman in
Clint Bowyer had a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase spot sewn up before Richmond began but it is what he did in the closing laps of Saturday’s race that has everyone raising their eyebrows.
Bowyer’s teammate Martin Truex was outside of a Chase spot when Bowyer’s No. 15 car spun around.
It could have been a accidental spin but in car audio prior to it consisted of radio transmission that asked “”Are your arms starting to hurt?” just before the No. 15 went around.
The result of Bowyer’s spin earned Truex Jr. and Joey Logano a spot in the Chase, at the expense of Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman who saw a trip to victory lane disappear that would have earned him a Wild Card spot in the Chase.
Bowyer attempted to downplay the incident in a post race interview while Newman simply blamed his pit crew for a poor pitstop that resulted in him losing a spot to Edwards prior to the final restart.

NASCAR’s John Darby does not believe that Bowyer intentionally spun his car to alter the outcome of the Chase.
