Tigers make slue of minor league re-signings

The Tigers were active on Thursday bolstering their minor league depth while adding a group of players who could see the field at the big league level.

Nick Ramirez is likely the name who will make the biggest impact for the club. Ramirez, 30, had a 4.07 ERA working 79 2/3 innings of relief last season at the big league level. After being outrighted off the roster in October he chose to return to a team who gives him a great chance to pitch big league innings for the entire season.

Frank Schwindel, who made his debut last season, was re-signed and is among those who could see a significant number of at-bats for the team. At 27, Schwindel’s biggest asset will be his power though his highest home run total was 24 in 2018 which shows just how desperate the Tigers are at this point. He will look to improve upon the 1-for-15 he produced during his first taste of the majors.

Pitchers Anthony Castro and Tim Adleman are two arms who could see time with the club. Castro, 24, has high minor league strike out numbers but lacks the command to be a dependable threat. The 31-year-old Adleman last appeared in the majors in 2017 but had strong numbers last season in the minors for the Tigers.

Outfielder Jose Azoxar was also signed. The solid contact hitter who broke out for 10 minor league home runs offers just enough to make him useful as minor league depth but his inability to consistently get on base leaves this 23-year-old ticketed for the minors.
