Braves picking up options on McCann, Hudson and Maholm

The Atlanta Braves will retain three players who were responsible for the teams appearance in the post season. The Braves will pick up the options for catcher Brian McCann and pitchers Tim Hudson and Paul Maholm. It is not surprising that the Braves are picking up all three options.

McCann will make $12 million next season and underwent shoulder surgery at the end of the season. The 28-year-old set career lows in nearly every statistical category last season as he produced a .230/.300/.399 line. McCann managed 20 home runs while appearing in 121 games, his lowest since his 2005 rookie season.

The 37-year-old Hudson was 16-7 with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He got off to a late start this season while dealing with a back injury and dealt with an ankle injury in season. He made $9 million in 2012 and will do so again next season.

The Braves acquired Paul Maholm mid-season from the Chicago Cubs. Maholm’s option is worth $6.5 million. He made 11 starts for the Braves. Maholm compiled a 13-11 record and a 3.67 ERA overall. He will occupy a spot at the back of the Braves rotation.
