Mariano Rivera vowed to pitch again after he tore his ACL in May. Since the injury the all-time saves leader has worked hard to return to baseball. While Rivera turns 43 it is fully expected that he will return next season as long as he is still at the top of his game.
“I’m coming back,” an emotional Rivera said in Kansas City a day after the injury. “Put it down. Write it down in big letters. I ain’t going down like this.”
Rivera though is considering retirement according to Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York
Rivera could retire but I doubt it. With 608 career saves and five World Series rings the standard Rivera likely holds himself to will be tough to match.
Prior to the start of the 2012 season Rivera declined to say if it would be his final season but said he knew whether it would be or not. It is unclear if the injury changed his thoughts or not since it was not until after the injury that he vowed to not go out that way.
Rivera threw out the first pitch prior to Game 3 of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles.
