It’s been over
ten years since Rich Aurilia was one of the best shortstops in baseball. Now 38 years of age the veteran of 15 major league seasons may retire following a season in which he hit just .213/.256/.279 with two homers and 16 RBI while battling an ankle injury.
While Aurilia says he is still actively seeking work, he told Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse that he may be calling it a career as he’s yet to even receive an invite to spring training.
Of the 15 years he’s spent in the majors 12 of them came as a member of the San Fransico Giants.
Despite being an above average shortstop
from much of his career he’s pretty much limited to playing first or third base or if a team was really desperate second base.
If Aurilia does opt to retire I would venture to guess that the Giants would be interested in bringing him back with a role inside the organization.
