The Carolina Panthers were unable to punch into the endzone on the first plays of the second quarter, even failing to score on fourth down. Fortunately for the Panthers their defense held the 49ers and forced a punt.
After a nice return by Ted Ginn the Panthers went to work.
It took all of seven seconds as Cam Newton hit Steve with a 31-yard touchdown pass. A extra point by Graham Gano gave the Panthers their first lead of the game.
Needless to say Smith reminded everyone that his knee was alright.
