Seneca Wallace is not retiring from the NFL contrary to multiple reports that surfaced on Friday. Wallace said he was surprised when he heard the news.
“I have not retired,” Wallace said in a phone interview with the Register. “I have just removed myself from the San Francisco situation because it wasn’t a perfect fit for me.”
The news started circulating after comments were made by San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh to various media outlets.
“It’s something that was his decision,” Harbaugh said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “He felt strongly about it. I don’t talk people out of that. I’ve never seen it done on game day, but I wish him well.”
Wallace said he asked for, and was granted his release from the 49rs, who had just picked him up on Aug 22, just days after the New Orleans Saints released him on Aug 19.
Wallace went a step further saying that the 49ers were using him to get Colt McCoy to take a pay cut, and never had an intention of giving him a real chance.
“I’ve been around this game long enough where I can see what’s going on, and I realized right away the reason they brought me here was to get Colt to take a pay cut.” Wallace told the Register.
It just so happens that according to reports, McCoy did take a pay cut earlier in the week.
Wallace said he has no hard feelings towards San Francisco or Harbaugh, but did tell the Register that it was not Harbaugh’s place to speak. “For him to come out and say that, ‘Hey, Seneca’s planning on his retirement’ … I don’t think that’s even 100 percent fair for him to come out and say that because I don’t even know him,” Wallace said. “I think that should be my decision.”
Wallace said he has no regrets in his career, and that he is waiting on calls, but if they don’t come, only then he will be ready to move on.
