A.J. Allmendinger failed a drug test conducted during the Kentucky race weekend. Subsequently he was pulled out of the #22 Shell Pennzoil Dodge for Saturday’s race at Daytona. Sam Hornish, who drives the #12 in the Nationwide Series, replaced Allmendinger behind the wheel of the Penske Racing Dodge and finished a dismal 33rd.

Thus far little information is known about the failed drug test by Allmendinger. It’s almost unheard of for NASCAR to announce what personnel test positive for but often this information does leak out. Allmendinger’s A sample tested positive for a banned substance, he has the right to request his B sample be tested. He had 72 hours to request that from the time of the failed A sample announcement.

Team owner Roger Penske called the failed test by Allmendinger “a disappointment” but offered little comment besides saying that they planned to have the B sample tested Monday or Tuesday.

Allmendinger had signed with Penske on a one year deal after racing for Richard Petty Motorsports and Red Bull in the past. Penske Racing hired the open wheel driver after it parted ways with Kurt Busch.
