Sadler likely to drive fourth RCR car at Daytona

Tandem drafting and a three car team do not work too well. That is why you can expect Elliott Sadler, or someone, will drive the #33 car for Richard Childress Racing in 2012. The #33 car is guaranteed a starting spot in the first five races of the season by virtue of Clint Bowyer’s finish inside the top-35 last season. Bowyer signed a contract to drive for Michael Waltrip Racing in 2012 with sponsorship coming from 5 Hour Energy.

Sadler told Dave Moody on SiriusXM that “I’ve said before if I got chance to be in competitive Cup car again, I would jump at the chance,” Sadler said that he has had conversations with Richard Childress but the two sides are still trying to find sponsorship to make it happen. Last season Sadler drove the #2 car for Kevin Harvick Inc and finished second in the Nationwide driver standings. Sadler had previously driven at the Sprint Cup level for teams such as Richard Petty Racing, Yates Racing and the Wood Brothers to name a few.

The reason RCR would want a car driven by Sadler is the tandem drafting that is so crucial at Daytona and Talladega. Last season RCR was able to pair Paul Menard and Kevin Harvick together while Jeff Burton worked with Bowyer. It is unknown what the pairings would be this year should Sadler run in the Daytona 500.

Sadler will again run the full Nationwide schedule where he will drive for RCR since KHI closed it’s doors and merged it’s assets with.

Update: Well that did not take long. Sadler will drive the #33 car at the Daytona 500 with backing from General Mills. General Mills is also a sponsor of Jeff Burton’s #31. In additional RCR announced that Brendan Gaughn will drive the car in four races next season with sponsorship from his family’s South Point Casino. Gaughn is to run 18 races between the Nationwide and Truck Series for the organization.
