Chris Carpenter stops rehab assignment

St. Louis Cardinals star pitcher Chris Carpenter said he is going to have to take a step back from baseball, and halt his rehab.

“Going to take a step back,” the veteran right-hander told reporters on Tuesday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Carpenter was shelled for four runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings this past Saturday at Triple-A Memphis and had a familiar feeling of numbness in his pitching hand.

Carpenter threw in the 89-91 mph range and topped out at 95 mph but he did not have his stuff when he needed it. Ten of his last 14 hitters faced reached base.

There is no timetable for Carpenter’s return, and the more setbacks Carpenter has, the more likely it is that this could be a career end-er for the 38 year old.
