Earl Weaver has passed away at the age of 82. Weaver won 1,480 games as the manager of the Baltimore Orioles. He was on a Orioles fantasy cruise at the time of his death.
Weaver was in his room with his wife, Maryanne, when he collapsed around 2 a.m. according to the New York Daily News. Weaver apparently died of a heart attack.
Orioles owner Peter Angelos, in a statement Saturday morning, said “Weaver stands alone as the greatest manager in the history of the Orioles organization and one of the greatest in the history of baseball.”
Weaver guided the Orioles to the World Series four times, winning it in 1970.
Along with winning, Weaver will be remembered for the 91 ejections he had during his time as Orioles manager. Weaver was not afraid to voice his opinion to umpires and once ejected had no qualms about kicking dirt at their shoes or on home plate.
The Orioles retired Weaver’s No. 4 in 1982. He was inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1996.
