Sam Hornish Jr. wants you to call before you dig

This weekend at Watkins Glen, Sam Hornish Jr., current driver of the No.22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge will feature a special paint scheme on his Dodge Charger.  (See It’s Official, Dodge Leaving NASCAR) The scheme will be in celebration of National Safe Digging Day which is August 11.

It will feature a “811 Promise” logo during the race, which is to help fans remember to CALL before they take on any home digging projects. You never know what underground wires you can run into, its better to be safe then sorry.

Fans that visit www.racetosouthbeach.com beginning on August 10 and make the pledge will be entered to win a VIP Race Weekend in South Beach during the final race of the season, and will be eligible for other prizes, such as Shell gift cards. (images of car available upon request)

Hornish Jr. will be using chassis “PRS-808”, it is the same one that A.J Allmendinger used at Sonoma Raceway for the Toyota Save Mart 350. The car started 17th and was solid all day, finishing in 9th position.

Hornish Jr. has made three cup starts at Watkins Glen, once each in 2009, 2010, and 2011. He finished 32nd,36th, and 14th respectively.

Hornish Jr. will be pulling double duty again this weekend at Watkins Glen International, competing in both Saturday’s Zippo 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and Sunday’s Finger Lakes 355k NASCAR Sprint Sup Series battle.

Hornish said that competing in the Nationwide race will give him more track time, “I think that running in both races this weekend should help us all the way around – in both Saturday’s Nationwide race and in Sunday’s Cup race,” said Hornish. “We did it there in 2008, so it’s not a new experience to run both races. Racing in both series’ races will be beneficial for sure. Sure, it’ll be another busy weekend bouncing back and forth between the Nationwide garage and the Cup garage. But, at least this weekend it won’t be a situation requiring planes and choppers to get back and forth like it was last weekend (in running the Pocono Cup race and the Iowa Nationwide race). The seat time on the track will be worth all the hustle there this weekend. Hopefully it will make us stronger in both the PPG Dodge in Saturday’s race and the Shell-Pennzoil Dodge in Sunday’s race.”
