Earlier today reports began circulating that the Texas Rangers would entertain offers for closer Joe Nathan. While the idea of a team fighting for a playoff spot trading away its ninth inning guy seems like a stretch the Rangers have engaged in talks with the Detroit Tigers.
FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reports that the Tigers and Rangers spoke about Nathan this weekend. While a trade would require more then speculation it is worth noting that Morosi is as plugged into the Tigers as anyone.
The Tigers had been seeking a ninth inning option earlier this season but Joaquin Benoit had settled into the role nicely of late. Benoit has not allowed a run in his last 12 appearances.
Texas is looking for outfield help as they are concerned that a suspension may be coming for outfielder Nelson Cruz. Though a trade with Detroit could be more likely to net the Rangers a starting pitcher then outfield help.
Nathan has 32 saves this season and a 1.73 ERA. He saved the All-Star Game for the American League and would figure to be replaced by Joakim Soria if traded.
