Will Power Claims Historic 700th Team Penske Pole at WWTR

Will Power – Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix – By: Paul Hurley

Will Power added another milestone to Team Penske’s storied legacy by securing the organization’s 700th career pole position across all racing series during NTT P1 Award qualifying for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline.

Power’s run at World Wide Technology Raceway earned him his first pole since July 2023 at Iowa Speedway, and the 71st of his INDYCAR SERIES career—extending his all-time record. Driving the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, he posted a two-lap average speed of 180.329 mph. Teammate Scott McLaughlin locked out the front row with a 179.783 mph average in the No. 3 DEX Imaging Chevrolet.

It marks Power’s fifth pole at the 1.25-mile oval, where he previously won in 2018.

“I sent it a lot,” Power said. “You have to go flat in Turns 3 and 4. I wasn’t quite flat, but really close. It’s been a while, so I’m pumped. Hopefully we can put it all together in the race. A win here would be awesome.”

Sunday’s 260-lap race, the second oval of the season, begins at 8 p.m. ET (FOX, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network).

A win by Power, McLaughlin, or Josef Newgarden would mark Team Penske’s first victory of the 2025 season. So far, the team’s best results have been third-place finishes from each of its three drivers.

Pato O’Ward qualified third at 179.190 mph in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Drivers late in the 27-car qualifying order benefited from cooler track temps as light cloud cover dropped surface temperatures nearly 10 degrees.

Team Penske influence extended throughout the top five. David Malukas, driving the No. 4 Clarience Technologies Chevrolet for A.J. Foyt Enterprises—which has a technical alliance with Penske—qualified fourth at 179.079 mph. Newgarden, a five-time winner at WWTR, was fifth at 178.910 mph in the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet.

Marcus Armstrong, in the No. 66 SiriusXM/Root Insurance Honda for Meyer Shank Racing w/ Curb-Agajanian, was sixth at 178.754 mph and the fastest Honda driver.

Championship leader Alex Palou, who’s won five of seven races this season, will start ninth after qualifying at 178.381 mph in the No. 10 Ridgeline Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.
