Clint Bowyer remains in NASCAR title hunt for another week

Kansas Speedway will welcome hometown driver Clint Bowyer to the track next weekend. Bowyer remains in contention for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title after outlasting the competition on fuel mileage at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It was the third win of the season for Bowyer.

Winning a race is great but Bowyer also remains a factor in the Sprint Cup Series title picture. While he is 28 points behind leader Brad Keselowski, Bowyer made up 12 points in Saturday nights race. Do not rule Bowyer out just yet.

Many people questioned the success Bowyer would have at Michael Waltrip Racing. After a disappointing 2011 season at Richard Childress Racing adequate sponsorship could not be found and Bowyer needed up with MWR. Instead of struggling Bowyer has already scored a career high in wins with three.

While Bowyer has three top-ten finishes in eight starts at Kansas the cause for concern is the success of drivers ahead of him in the championship hunt. Jimmie Johnson is one of the best at the track and both Denny Hamlin and Keselowski have won there in the past.

Bowyer will have his work cut out for him but ruling him out so quickly may be a mistake. Getting one car into the Sprint Cup Chase seemed like a tough task for MWR as the Daytona 500 approached. Instead the team got two cars, one more then fellow Toyota team Joe Gibbs Racing. It would not have been unreasonable to think Bowyer or teammate Martin Truex Jr would win a race but to think Bowyer would win three?
