Matt Kenseth announced in June that he would not be returning to Roush Fenway Racing (RFR), but so far there hasn’t been an announcement of where the 2003 NASCAR Champion is going, but that could all change next week.
It is said that there is a clause in Kenseth’s contract that barred him to speak of contract changes until a specific date in August. (Read about the contract issues here)
It is now being said that Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is set to make an an announcement next Tuesday, (so mark your calendars that is September 4) that they have signed Kenseth to drive the No.20 Toyota Camry with Home Depot as its primary sponsor.
Yes, you heard right, ESPN is reporting No.20 and Home Depot for Kenseth’s ride next season.
Where does that leave Joey Logano? Well, Gibbs is still holding out hope to have him in a fourth car at JGR, but only if sponsorship can be found.
Supposedly, one of Logano’s options at JGR was a part-time cup ride and full-time Nationwide Series ride, but we can’t blame him for not wanting to take that offer when the No.22 of Penske Racing is a full season Cup Ride with full sponsorship.
Roger Penske is planning to make an announcement at Chicagoland who will be in his No.22 Ford Fusion next season. We have heard lots of names thrown around, Logano being the one heard the most, but even Carl Edward’s name was thrown into the mix in last weeks latest set of rumors.
Penske is still open to having Sam Hornish Jr. drive a fourth car for the team, if they could find another half season of sponsorship. Alliance Trucking, Hornish’s current Nationwide sponsor said they would sponsor Hornish for half of a Cup season.
The announcement next Tuesday is not expected to involve Logano.
I hope Penske does indeed have a cup ride for Sam. He deserves it that is for sure. Sam should have the chance to drive a full year without the doubts of someone else getting into his car at any given time. Not a fan of bk at all and i can’t see he and Joey on the same team, they are so different. Their personalities are so different. Joey is a nice guy smiles a lot fairly well liked and brad is an a–. To be honest i don’t see how Sam can stand working around him. In fact i really don’t know how Roger can stand him.
