Someone elses money puts Menard in NWS race?

Posted by John On February - 13 - 2010

Paul Menard, wCamping World 300 - Practiceho is scheduled to run a full season in the Nationwide Series with Roush Fenway Racing, almost saw the rain end his chances of making the first race of the year.

Menard is not guaranteed a spot in the top 35 in the Nationwide Series and would have to have made the race based on his qualifying time. Then rain came, canceling qualifying and the truck race which was to happen later last night.

To determine the starting field for the race NASCAR pulled out the rule book. Below is how the field order was determined via NASCAR.com.

The lineup would be set per the rule book, with the following parameters coming into play: The top-30 owners in the 2009 standings — or teams they had “transferred” their points to — got those spots. Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart, who won races last season, got the next two positions, followed by 2000 series champion Jeff Green.

The remaining 10 spots would go to the top 10 positions in the randomly-drawn qualifying order, if they were not already in the lineup.

Ten spots remained and they went to a draw. Menard drew a number that would have him just miss the race, and then suddenly five teams who were at the track for the chance of cashing in on 45,000 went to the NASCAR hauler and withdrew from the field.

The result put Menard back in the field.

A team manager at Roush Fenway stated that he could not talk about it and that it was confidential.

While the deal may make some question what exactly is going on here I don’t think it’Daytona 500 Qualifyings entirely a bad thing. Menard plans to run the full Nationwide schedule for Roush Fenway and is expected to be a top 5 team at the end of the year. Menard finished sixth in the standings the last time he raced a full schedule. It’s also a car with sponsor’s on it (even if they were paid for by Menards dad) that would have easily made the field had their been qualifying and perhaps best of all it’s a car that will run the full race baring accident which is more then can be said for any team that went home yesterday.

Those going home probably received around 50,000 as the payout was guaranteed to be 45,000 for running the race.

If Jack Roush did pay these teams off which it seems like he did, then it will be interesting to see how much Menard can recover of the $2.5 million plus he paid out to get him in the field.

I have to admit though I suspect that Roush is playing big picture here. He knows that he’ll get well in excess the difference should Menard remain in the seat of the 98 Fusion on the Nationwide Series this year and even more should he keep a blue oval on the front of his car past this season.

Pieces falling into place, Mears or Menard in 07?

Posted by John On October - 24 - 2009

Food City 500 PracticeThe answer figures to come soon. Who will drive the 07 car in 2010? Current driver Casey Mears and Richard Childress Racing publicly have stated they’d all like to see the partnership continue but sponsorship is a sticking point.

In recent days sources revealed to Fox Sports that Ask.com could come aboard the 07 car for a partial schedule which would seem to suggest that Mears would be returning. However it’s also worth noting with the recent crew changes, Doug Randolph is the new crew chief for the 07 car and in the past was the crew chief for Paul Menard when the two were a part of Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Menard would bring full time sponsorship to the 07 car should he fill the seat currently occupied by Mears. John Menard, the owner of Menards, is said to want his son to drive the 07 car next season at RCR while Paul would like to finish out his contract in the 98 car.

Price Chopper 400 QualifyingThe above statement is curious as it only leads minds to wonder. John Menard obviously wants to see the car which he is paying for to be competitive and I would assume Paul has the same desires. The fact that Paul is interested in finishing out his contract in the 98 car begs two questions to be asked once you get past the initial rhetorical why?

Is Paul Menard wanting to finish out his contract in the 98 to shush critics that say he’s only in a car due to his fathers money or does he really believe that with the merger between Yates Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports that he would be more competitive in his current ride?

It’s easy to say Menard’s 2009 season is partially a result of a move from Dale Earnhardt Inc to Yates Racing. But is it better to race again with the team he was with this season and talk about 2011 later or would he be better served to go ahead and switch rides now?

I figure we’ll soon see what’s in store for these drivers and more.

Big Money with Menard(s)

Posted by John On October - 9 - 2009

Food City 500If you’ve been following NASCAR the last few weeks you can’t help but notice that the ‘Silly Season’ has started early. With Brad Keselowski already signed to a deal for 2010 the biggest fish in the sea is Paul Menard.

Menard, a 29 year old native of  Eau Claire Wisconsin, is currently in his third full season on the Spring Cup Series. Over parts of six seasons he’s started 104 races and has placed one top 5 and two top 10’s in his career.

While Menard has shown glimpses of having a breakout during the 2009 season the real reason his name is being thrown around is the sponsorship he brings along with him. Paul Menard is the son of Menard’s founder John Menard Jr.

Menards Career Stats

YEAR RACES WINS T5 T10 POLE AvFIN RANK
2007 30 0 0 0 0 26.8 34
2008 36 0 1 1 1 25.4 26
2009 29 0 0 0 0 26.4 32
TOTAL 104 0 1 2 1 26 --

Currently Menard is in year one of a two year contract he signed with Yates racing. However, when Yates and RPM merge it would in essence give Menard a legal out of his contract. The signals have been mixed public. Menard stated that he would be fine racing the merged Yates/RPM Ford’s in 2010 but there’s also been talk that the driver and his agent were looking to see what other options were on the table.

Toyota/Save Mart 350 QualifyingThe statement from Richard Petty Motor-sports co-owner George Gillett last week in Kansas only fueled speculation that Menard may be headed elsewhere in 2010. Gillett stated that the team was set with three cars heading into 2010 and had hopes for a fourth. Originally Menard was listed along with Kasey Kahne, A.J. Almendinger and Elliott Sadler as the four drivers for the merged teams in 2010.

Acquiring Menard is the equivalent of having guaranteed full time sponsorship on one car all season. There is a high level of speculation that the merger of Yates and RPM is being held up due to the status of Menard’s contract.

Richard Childress Racing has been rumored to be interested in putting Menard behind the wheel of the 07 car currently being driven by Casey Mears. Jack Daniels the current primary sponsor of the car will be leaving NASCAR following this season and Mears’ results have not generated a ton of interest from other potential sponsors.

While Childress would seem the most likely destination should Menard leave Yates/RPM

racing other names have been thrown around. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, who Menard raced for from 2005-2008, has also been mentioned as well as becoming the second car in Robby Gordon Motor-sports which Menard’s father also owns a part of.
