The 49ers hired Chip Kelly as their head coach and now the organization turns its sights to shoring up its defense.
After reports circulated that the 49ers would retain defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, CSN Bay Area is now reporting that Mike Vrabel will meet with the team regarding the position.
The 40-year-old Vrable spent 14 seasons in the NFL as a player moving from the Steelers to the Patriots before finishing up his career with the Chiefs. He spent the last two seasons with the Texans as a linebacker coach and previously coached the linebackers and defensive line at Ohio State.
Whoever does coach the 49ers defense is in for a tough task. Under Kelly, the Eagles defense saw the most plays against in two of his three seasons and was third in the other. With that amount of time on the field the 49ers defense could be in some trouble this coming season.
Ray Day is expected to be named the 49ers offensive coordinator. He worked as the Eagles quarterbacks coach under Kelly.
