The Dallas Cowboys have exercised their fifth-year option on left tackle Tyron Smith.

By picking up Smith’s option the Cowboys are guaranteeing him $10.039 million in 2015. The team ideally will work out an extension with Smith and wide receiver Dez Bryant soon.

Smith’s base salary in 2014 will remain $2.079 million.

The Cowboys selected Smith as the ninth overall pick in the 2011 draft.

While the Cowboys may want to know more about the salary cap in 2015, waiting to re-sign Smith could end up benefitting him more as other tackles figure to lock up deals in due time.

Smith has missed just one game in his NFL career. He played as a right tackle in 2011 before moving to left tackle in 2012.
