Jared Allen threatens retirement if contract demands not met

Free agent defensive lineman Jared Allen claims he is ready to walk away from the NFL if his contract demands are not met.

“He wants his market value, he wants his fair salary, and if he does not get it, Jared Allen is very much at peace,” Rapoport said on NFL Network’s “Free Agency Frenzy.” “… He is willing to simply go about his life and walk away from football.” reports Ian Rapoport.

Allen had been linked to the Denver Broncos for days but once the Dallas Cowboys released DeMarcus Ware the Broncos began showing interest in him rather than Allen.

Both Allen and Ware are experienced players who can still offer play-making ability even as their career begins its downside.

“I will tell you this,” Rapoport said. “Jared Allen has a ton of admiration for Barry Sanders, who walked away from football while still having his best, still able to play at a high level. He walked on his own terms, it’s something Jared Allen has always respected.”

We find it hard to believe that Allen would simply walk away from the game because he could not get his contract demands met in free agency. Numerous teams could use a player like Allen, who may have to take less if he wants to play on a contender.
