Former Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years probation for the death of teammate Jerry Brown.

Brent was convicted Wednesday of intoxication manslaughter for a December 2012 crash on a suburban Dallas highway that killed Brown, who was a passenger in Brent’s Mercedes.

Brent could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. His blood alcohol content was 0.18, more than twice the legal limit in Texas of 0.08.

Brown’s mother, Stacey Jackson, has publicly forgiven Brent. On Thursday she said that Brent was responsible for her sons death but that everyone makes mistakes.

Brent retired from football last year.
