Notre Dame: Kelly says Andrew Hendrix is “clearly the number-two quarterback”

There are no questions when it comes to the quarterback spot on depth chart at Notre Dame.

Andrew Hendrix is the backup behind Tommy Rees.

“There’s a clear pecking order here, 1-2-3. Andrew is clearly the number-two quarterback and ready to play,” head coach Brian Kelly said, via ESPN. “I think I made it pretty clear that if I believe Andrew can help in winning football games, I am not a guy that’s going to be hesitant to put him in at any time to help us win. The evaluation is always about, for me, Can you help us win football games?

“Andrew can help us win. And we’ll see if there’s a time and place necessary for him to come in and help us win games. Right now Tommy is the guy.”

While Hendrix has less time on the field then Rees his size and speed would seemingly make him an asset in the read-option, like last year’s starter Everett Golson.

Last season Hendrix was 5-for-7 for 55 yards though the air and ran for another 41 yards. He spent the 2011 season behind Rees as well.

The news that Hendrix is the backup would put Malik Zaire No. 3 on the Fighting Irish depth chart.
