Former MLB pitcher dies of pneumonia in Venezuela

Marcos Carvajal, a former pitcher for the Rockies and Marlins, died on Wednesday in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, the Miami Herald reports. Carvajal was 33 years old.

According to the Miami Herald’s report, Carvajal died of pneumonia that was not treated in time because of a medication shortage in his home country of Venezuela.

“According to press reports from that nation, Carvajal could not receive the medicines to treat pneumonia that had been afflicting him in recent days and his body could not withstand the disease,” the report states.

Carvajal appeared in 42 big league games for the Rockies and Marlins. He retired from baseball in 2011 and began working with his family.
