The Seattle Mariners have joined a group of teams interested in Chicago Cubs pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel.
While the Mariners are interested in both pitchers they prefer Samardzija since he has years remaining on his contract. The Mariners are also in need of offense so its no guarantee that they stay in the hunt for either pitcher for long.
The Blue Jays had been hotly linked to Samardzija in recent days but Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that they re more likely to trade for Hammel as they are concerned with trading too many top prospects at once. Samardzija, who has would be a free agent after 2015, would likely cost two top prospects. Hammel on the other hand is a free agent at the end of the season and could come rather cheaply.
