Cardinals activate Mark Ellis from DL

The St. Louis Cardinals activated second baseman Mark Ellis from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Ellis, 36, began the season on the disabled list while dealing with tendinitis in his left knee. Now he has been recalled to the majors after one rehab game. He will serve as a backup for Kolten Wong at second base.

In order to make room for the veteran Ellis, the Cardinals have optioned Pete Kozma to Triple-A Memphis. Kozma had three at-bats for the Cardinals this season and will now serve as depth for them at the minor league level.

Ellis spent the 2013 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers wher ehe hit .270/.323/.351 in 126 games.
