Nationals to use Ross Detwiler out of bullpen

While Ross Detwiler may have more upside than some of the pitchers who will start the 2014 season in the Washington Nationals rotation, manager Matt Williams believes the left hander can be something “special” out of the pen.

Detweiler, 27, made 13 starts for the Nationals past season posting a 4.04 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.

The Nationals will start the season with both Taylor Jordan and Tanner Roark in the rotation. Both pitchers out-pitched Detwiler this spring which probably had something to do with Williams’ decision.

A good showing out of the bullpen coupled with the struggles of Roark or Jordan could easily change things up.

Detwiler has spent his entire big league career with the Nationals but has only one full season in the rotation. In 85 career games he owns a 18-29 record 3.79 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Detwiler has never strike out a ton of batters but he does not hurt himself with the walks either.
