Brian Wilson says knuckleball is not a gimmick

Brian Wilson began spring training with a knuckleball. Immediately everyone took notice figuring that Wilson was just joking around to start the spring.

That apparently is not the case.

“I never [expletive] around, it’s an out pitch,” Wilson told Fangraphs‘ Eno Sarris.

Wilson appears to have no concerns using the pitch during the regular season, or even as his go to pitch if necessary.

“Why would you be scared? I don’t understand,” said Wilson. “I’ve seen a lot of lot of home runs on 100 mph fastballs and a lot of people think that’s the best pitch on earth, I’ve seen Mariano [Rivera] give up runs and he’s got arguably the best pitch in the history of baseball.”

Fully healthy the 31-year-old Wilson is set to begin his second season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last season he appeared in 18 games down the stretch and finished with a 0.66 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP.
